Grateful Dead Origins - Advanced Copy - signed/sketched by Noah Van Sciver

$250.00
sold out

Last year, Noah Van Sciver illustrated the Grateful Origins graphic novel. The limited edition came in a slipcase with the graphic novel, an LP of a wonderful show from 8/21/68, and three digital prints.

On a recent trip to visit Noah, I brought my copy for him to sign. When he saw it, he said, “that’s not the version I was sent!”

It seems the artist (Noah) and the writing (Chris Miskiewicz) were each sent five advance preview copies, which are much larger than the final released edition. The preview copies come in a large box which folds open, as opposed to a slipcase. This box fits both the LP and the graphic novel, unlike the final version, which only holds the book. You can see the comparison between the box and case in the pictures.

Both Chris and Noah were sent five of these boxes, which also seem to contain a variant of the book itself, as seen on the back cover when viewed side by side. The preview box books and LPs are in shrink-wrap, and we did not want to open them to check for other differences.

We don’t know why they opted for the slipcase over the box, or how many of the box were created. Assuming Z2 kept some, and some were sent to the Grateful Dead folks, it might be 25-50. It could be they printed the whole run of 6800, and then changed their mind, and pulped them all.

What I do know is there there are three signed copies of this rare box set, because I watched Noah sign them. Each copy contains a shrink-wrapped copy of the book and record. They do not contain the prints which came with the final deluxe edition, nor do they contain the certificate of authenticity which accompanied some (but not all?) of the Z2 final edition.

Noah signed each box on the insider and included a sketch of the hippie version of his mustache Noah character. We’re selling each of these for $250, with 100% of the profits going right into Noah’s pocket.

Being a Deadhead myself, and a collector of all things Noah, I’m buying one, which leaves just two up for sale.

The box looks incredible and it measures 13x17x2, as opposed to the final slipcase edition which measures 9x15x1. First person to order gets to pick between the sketches shown.
